Private wells do not receive the routine monitoring that public water systems do, so regular testing is an important part of making sure your water is safe. The Illinois Department of Public Health recommends that private wells be tested annually for coliform bacteria and nitrate/nitrite, with additional testing for other contaminants when appropriate.
IDPH also recommends thorough disinfection of new, cleaned, or repaired wells and advises well disinfection when bacterial contamination is detected. After disinfection, the system should be properly flushed and the water tested to verify its bacteriological quality.
Even water that looks, smells, and tastes perfectly normal can contain bacteria or other contaminants. Routine testing provides peace of mind and can identify potential problems before they become a larger concern.
With more than 10 years in the water industry, I’ve seen firsthand how important clean, safe water is. As a husband and dad, I understand the peace of mind that comes from knowing the water your family uses every day is safe.
